Write Speed

The most important feature on an SD Card is the write speed. This determines how fast a memory card can store information on their flash storage. It is used when you are moving files to your SD Card or capturing videos and photos in your camera. Having fast write speed on memory card means a quicker time in saving files to your memory card.

Professional cameras and action cameras also require memory cards with fast write speeds. When you are recording high-resolution videos it is required that your SD Card can accept information from the camera with the rate that it encodes information.

To give you an idea, a GoPro camera requires at least 7.5 MB per second write speed on your memory card while shooting 4k 60 FPS videos.

Using slow SD Cards that can’t keep up with your camera’s speed can cause problems. Most of the time files would be corrupted or videos would have frame drops. On GoPros, a slow SD Card would often cause SD error which is really annoying.

In this case, The Samsung Evo Select packs a 90 MB per second write speed compared to the SanDisk Ultra’s  10 MB per second write speed. It is clear that the Samsung Evo Select is a lot faster compared to the SanDisk Ultra. However, keep in mind that the SanDisk Ultra is priced way cheaper than the Samsung Evo Select.

Read Speed

Read speed is the capacity of your memory card to transfer files to another storage device. Higher read speed means faster file transfer which is important if you are transferring large files. This is often disregarded by buyers without knowing that read speed can be beneficial in the long run.

After using your camera you would probably want to transfer the photos and videos to your computer for some editing. If you have an SD Card with very slow read speed you would end up waiting for hours just to finish moving the files from your memory card to your computer.

SanDisk Ultra has a read speed of 100 MB per second while the Samsung Evo Select also features a 100 MB per second read speed. Both cards offer a decent read speed but the SanDisk Ultra is a lot cheaper compared to the Samsung Evo Select.

SD Card Sizes

The Samsung Evo Select model is offered on the following storage options:

  • 32 GB
