The super fast V90 speed class was introduced on SD Memory Cards back in 2016. This new category was designed specifically to serve demanding video recording on 4k and 8k cameras. In fact V90 is currently at the top of the list among memory card classes, as seen on the image below by the SD Association.

The bottom class is the V6 which is rated at 6 MB per second, V30 being the mid-level rating, and can reach up to 30 MB per second write speeds, and the top tier V90 cards which has a minimum speed of 90 MB per second.

Now, let’s discuss how V90 memory cards performs.

V90 SD Card Speed

Memory cards rated at this class are the top end or top tier when we speak about performance. Most SD cards at this level reach more than 200 MB per second read and write speeds. This makes V90 cards compatible with 4K and higher video resolutions for high-end cameras.

For example, Sony makes V90 UHS-II SD cards that can reach up to 299 MB per second sequential write speed and a 300 MB sequential read speed. These cards are mostly used by professional videographers who record high-resolution and high frame rate video footage.

Speed Class Comparison: V90 vs V30 SD Card

Given that the price for these two memory card types has a huge difference, you may be wondering… is this also the case when it comes to their performance?

Let’s find out!

SD cards rated at V30 usually have a write speed of up to 30 MB per second while V90 cards can reach up to 90 MB per second. In this case, V90 cards would perform better especially on sequential burst shots. The camera’s buffer would clear significantly faster when you are using V90 cards since it has a higher burst write speed.

This means your camera would be available faster to take the next shot compared to using V30 memory cards. This can be crucial especially if you are a photographer who takes shots of fast phased events like a basketball game, car racing events, or wild-life photography. So, if these things are important for you then you should consider getting a V90 card.
