What SD Card do You Need for Your Dashcam?

In general, dashcams don’t require ultra-fast cards. But, if you are buying an SD Card it should be an endurance type and can last on hot environments especially when your car is parked out in the sun. High Endurance cards are the best SD Card for dashcam.

SD Card Type

Most dashcams use Micro SD Cards as flash storage but still depends on the model. To give you an idea, here are the types of SD Card and their size.

  • Micro SD Card – 32.00 mm X 24.00 mm
  • SD Card – 11.00 mm X 15.00 mm

Speed Class

Memory Card speed is categorized by speed class, the higher the speed class the faster the card is.

  • Class 10 – this type of card is designed for 1080P resolution videos and lower. It has a write speed of up to 10 MB per second.
  • UHS 1 – cards rated at this class is almost the same with class 10 cards. The main difference is that UHS-1 cards uses a newer generation of technology and can hold 10 MB per second write speeds better.
  • UHS 3 or V30 – V30 cards are designed for 4k video recordings and have at least 30 MB per second write speed.
  • V60 and V90 these SD Cards are overkill for dash cameras. It has a write speed that reaches up to 60 MB/sec for V60 and 90 MB/sec for V90 which is used for 8k videos. Most dashcams won’t shoot at that kind of resolution.

SD Card Size

One of the most important things to consider when buying an SD Card for your dashcam is the storage capacity. You would be alright with lower capacity cards like 32 GB but if you want to keep footage of your dashcam longer you should consider getting memory cards with larger storage. We would recommend getting an SD Card with at least 128 GB storage capacity.

If you drive for a long period of time or your work is far from your home, then the larger 128 GB storage is advisable. You can record longer video footage on your dashcam and old footage on your dashcam would be available for longer periods of time.
