Western Digital (WD) SSD – Overview

Before proceeding with the comparison between the said SSD makers, let’s first have a quick overview of both.

SSDs, in general, are helpful to get better overall performance. And, Western Digital (WD) ensures that you get an even better performance in IOPS as compared to other vendors. It also offers significantly more features from the driver’s point of view as it helps to create backup partitions properly.

WD SSD

What’s more, your WD SSD can work for both Windows/MAC environments parallelly. Yes, WD SSDs are well-suited for use in both Windows and Mac OS as there are tools available to access the files in a multi-os environment. Other hardware doesn’t really allow multi os file system access with this much ease.

Now, let’s discuss the Pros and Cons of Western Digital (WD) SSDs in general.

Pros

  • Multi-OS. WD SSDs work well in both Windows/MAC environments.
  • WD offers a tool that helps to use the hard disk as backup recovery points.

WD vs Samsung SSD – Specs Comparison

Now, let’s compare WD vs Samsung SSD. In order to make the comparison fair, I’ve chosen similar products from both brands – the WD Blue SSD and the Samsung 860 Evo. Let’s have a pointwise comparison between these SSDs:

#1. Interface and Form Factor

When you compare WD Blue SSD vs Samsung 860 Evo in terms of their interface and form factor, you’ll notice that these drives are a bit different from each other.

With an external size of 2.5 inches, the WD Blue SSD features a SATA 3 interface and an M.2 2280 form factor. This makes it suitable for use on PCs and laptops. However, it’s unsuitable for ultra-thin devices.

Samsung 860 Evo also has a size of 2.5 inches and is equipped with M.2 2280 form factor which makes it suitable for use in a laptop or PC. But, you also get an mSATA option for those who want to install this SSD on ultra-thin devices. Its interface is SATA 3.

#2. Read/Write Speed

The Read/Write Speed of an SSD is a very important aspect when making a buying decision. The WD Blue SSD offers a sequential read speed of up to 560 MB/s and a sequential write speed of up to 530 MB/s. The Samsung 860 Evo, on the other hand, manages a sequential read speed of up to 550 MB/s, and the sequential write speed is 520 MB/s.

Therefore, when it comes to read/write speed, WD Blue SSD is a little bit better than Samsung 860 Evo. However, in the real-world scenario, the performance is more or less the same.

#3. TBW Rate

Another key difference between the two SSDs comes in their TBW (Terabytes Written Rates). The TBW rate is especially important for gamers.

In this aspect, the Samsung 860 Evo has far better TBW rates than WD Blue SSD. So, the Samsung 860 Evo is ideal for rendering and gaming purposes.

#4. Capacity

The WD Blue SSD offers 5 capacities – 320GB, 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 5TB. The Samsung 860 EVO SSD also offers 5 capacities including 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB.

So, both the SSDs offer fairly good options in terms of their capacities.

#5. Warranty

Both WD Blue SSD and Samsung 860 Evo have a 5-year limited warranty.

#6. Price

Which SSD Will You Choose?

Now that you know quite a lot about the SSDs from both brands, I hope that you’ll be able to make a wise decision as to which one to choose. Let me also tell you about my own opinion. If you are looking for an SSD for leisure work, then going with the WD Blue SSD is a wise decision as it is super speedy and comes at a better price.

However, if you’re a gamer or a professional who wants high TBW, then you should go for the Samsung 860 Evo SSD. Even though it’s priced relatively higher, it is great for heavy or professional use. So, the better SSD for you all depends on your own needs and preferences.
